Mondo Queero's Midnight Movie - Performance

  • HOME 2 Tony Wilson Place Manchester, England, M1 5WG United Kingdom (map)

A violent East London gangster undergoes a transformation of identity while hiding from his former colleagues in the home of a jaded Bohemian rock star.

Mondo Queero is a small collective of film fans who are bringing queer cinema to the suburbs in a relaxed environment. From their home at The Carlton Club in Whalley Range, Mondo Queero create opportunities for the queer community to get together and watch films. Programmers Matthew and Erin have a shared passion for the New Queer Cinema of the 90s, but Mondo Queero's screening choices span far and wide within the Queer Canon.

Join them for a midnight movie, the kind of film that deserves to be seen late at night with an audience that's open to anything and a film that serves up everything and more.

Mondo Queero's Matthew Rothery sums up why they chose Performance as the perfect midnight movie for SCENE:

Directed by Donald Cammell & Nicolas Roeg, Performances is a film about an identity crisis. Maybe that’s why it appeals so much to queer audiences. It is undoubtedly a direct influence on the straight-up gangster film. But where Guy Ritchie may have borrowed the brutal punches, he left out the performance. The playful flamboyance of Mick Jagger as Turner is as queer-coded and sexually ambiguous as Tim Curry in Rocky Horror. It’s fascinating to see Chas (James Fox) seduced by this world that he’s stumbled into.

It’s 1968, swinging London seems to have swung out. It’s not just psychedelic, it’s sex and violence played out in shocking bursts of frenetic editing. Accompanied by a blues/rock/electronic hybrid soundtrack that uses prototype Moog synth noises that the wider world was hearing for the first time.

Achieving cult status by being ignored and misunderstood at the time of release (1970), a whole two years after it was made, it ticks all the boxes as the perfect ‘Midnight Movie’. You’ll end up watching this cut-up masterpiece over and over again. Welcome to your new obsession.
